Screen Printing on T-Shirt that now widely applicated in printing business, would be introduced to Western Europe from Asia sometime in the the late 1700's, but would not gain large acceptance or use in Europe until silk mesh was more available for trade from the east and a profitable outlet for the medium discovered. Screen printing was first patented in England by Samuel Simon in 1907.
Originally a popular screen printing method to print expensive wall paper. Higher grades of wall paper were actually printed on linen, silk, and other fine fabrics. Jealously guarded as a valuable trade secret, western screen printers developed reclusive, defensive, and exclusionary business policies focused on secreting workshop knowledge and techniques.
Early in the 1910's several printers experimenting with photo-reactive chemicals used the well known actinic light activated cross linking or hardening traits of potassium, sodium or ammonium bichromate chemicals with glues and gelatin compounds. Roy Beck, Charles Peter and Edward Owens studied and experimented with chromic acid salt sensitized emulsions for photo-reactive stencils. This trio of developers would prove to revolutionize the commercial screen printing industry by introducing photo-imaged stencils to the industry, the acceptance of this method would take many years.
Commercial screen printing now uses sensitizers far safer and less toxic than bichromates, currently there are large selections of pre-sensitized and "user mixed" sensitized emulsion chemicals for creating photo-reactive stencils.
Now, a t-shirt is a style statement, which lets a person wear one’s attitude. Many prints are available and can cater to all moods and occasions. Theme t-shirts are usually used to denote patronage to a certain team, occasion or corporate. Increase in demand of custom-made clothes is a major reason for the growing popularity of t-shirt screen printing business.
The process of t-shirt screen printing involves multiple steps:
First, the design to be imprinted on the t-shirt is selected. The design is then imprinted on the screen. This screen is placed on the fabric and paint is forced through the screen, onto the fabric. There are various methods to create the screen used in the printing process, each having their own pros and cons.
The print selected for the t-shirt should be eye catching and self-explanatory.The print maybe bold, artistic or witty, depending on the purpose one adorns the T-shirt.
If a person has a few plain T-shirts in the wardrobe it is a good option to avail of a personal screen printing kit. This allows a person to be creative and use the t-shirt as a canvas for expression. With the ever increasing demand for custom-made clothing and more and more people venturing into the t-shirt screen printing business, it is now possible to wear what one wants.
